In-house nutters at AMG have taken the - somewhat ugly - Mercedes GLC and has gone to town with power and handling in their latest AMG-63 model. The twin-Turbo V8 produces no less than 503BHP, which makes for a scary high-powered family SUV. But, that's the point right? What's it like to drive though? Last week, I was in Germany to find out:

Whilst the 500BHP monster maintains its level of luxury, the body work is more flamboyant, with air-intakes and chromed skirts the GLC AMG really makes an impression. The interior is simply stunning, with mood lighting and touch-screens for your every need, it seems the GLC is actually a competitor for the GLS, aswell as anything else on the market.

Subtle, yet powerful.

First impressions behind the wheel of the GLC AMG give the feeling that this car really isn't mad at all. The ride is smooth, dignified and comfortable. The engine doesn't scream at you like you would expect from a top-line AMG. However, if you move the little switch to Sport+, all hell brakes loose. This is when the stats of the crazy Merc really come to life:

  • 503BHP Twin-Turbo 4.0 V8
  • 0-100 in 4.8 seconds
  • 4-Matic drive system
  • Twin-Clutch Paddle Shift System
Subtle, yet powerful.

Honestly, it's hard not to want one. Very rarely do you find a car so comfortable, spacious and yet burns a hole in road when you want it to. Leather, premium stitching and a tech-packed dashboard, just to name a few, are reasons you'll love this car.

What would it be like to live with? Well, many don't see themselves looking at a twin-turbo V8 in an economy where fuel prices are soaring and governments are cashing in on emissions. However, if you can ignore those somewhat small setbacks, you'll find the mid-sized AMG monster a delight to own. The handling is like no other SUV we've ever tested and its straight-line power is hypnotic! All that said, it's not very pretty by anyone's standards. I wouldn't like to look at it on a daily basis and could see myself running to the car in the mornings to avoid being seen getting into it. However, once you're in, it's fantastic.
Many thanks to Mercedes-Benz Niederlassung Stuttgart for their hospitality and allowing us to review this awesome SUV.
